From overstock to recurring returns flows

Stock situations we assess

Surplus stock can arise at different points within an organisation: overproduction, residual stock, returns, discontinued models, residual seasonal stock, project surplus, or stock made available through a move, reorganisation or product range change.

Stock & Trade assesses complete commercial non-food stock that no longer fits normal operations or sales channels. This may be one one-off lot, several product groups or a recurring stock flow.

Commercial stock

Different causes, one complete stock picture

The condition does not have to be uniform or fully checked. Mixed lots, different packaging, B-stock and stock not yet fully inventoried can also be submitted. Preferably share the complete stock offered; we will then assess the options.

Surplus stock does not always arise from one clear cause. A stock submission may, for example, partly consist of overproduction, supplemented by returns, discontinued models or items left after a product range change.

The cause provides useful context but does not determine on its own whether a purchase is possible. We assess the stock as a whole, considering its composition and condition, scale and commercial potential, and the practical feasibility of a potential purchase.

You do not need to divide the stock into separate situations or saleable parts in advance. Sharing the complete picture allows us to assess which items can jointly form part of a commercially and practically feasible purchase.

Different causes can together form one complete stock submission.

Commercial stock

Common stock situations

Overstock and overproduction

Overstock arises when more stock is available than can be sold through the normal sales plan. Causes may include revised forecasts, minimum production quantities, cancelled orders, falling demand or overly broad purchasing or production plans.

Even new, current and fully resale-ready products can tie up capital and warehouse space unnecessarily when stored for a long time. Stock & Trade therefore assesses both temporary surpluses and larger lots from structural overproduction.

We consider the product group, quantities, stock value, age, packaging, location and any resale conditions, among other factors. Where direct purchase is feasible, we make clear arrangements concerning price, payment, transfer, onward sale and any collection and transport of the goods purchased.

Current products can also become overstock when quantities and sales no longer match.

Residual and slow-moving stock

Residual stock often consists of the final quantities from a range, product series, project or earlier purchase. Slow-moving stock does not sell sufficiently through normal channels because of factors such as changing demand, age, product range changes or limited fit with the current market.

This stock does not have to be damaged or technically outdated. New and fully saleable products can also become slow moving when quantities, demand and sales pace no longer align.

Stock & Trade assesses residual and slow-moving stock within the complete stock offered. We consider the products, quantities, age, condition, available information, commercial usability and possible markets. Less popular items can sometimes contribute to a feasible overall solution when combined with other stock.

Slow-moving stock is not automatically worthless; it may simply no longer fit your normal range or sales channel.

Returns stock, B-stock and refurbishment

Returns stock and B-stock can leave the normal sales flow for many reasons, including unopened returns, opened packaging, products with cosmetic signs of use, packaging damage or items that are saleable again after checking.

Not every return has the same condition. State as clearly as possible which part has been checked, which defects are known and which part remains unknown. Existing returns reports, condition codes, photos and samples can help.

Refurbishment is relevant here only where complete end products have been professionally checked or repaired and can legally and safely be resold. State what check or work was performed, by whom, and what warranty or product information is available.

A mixed submission with different conditions may be offered together. Stock & Trade assesses the actual composition and determines the options for the lot as a whole.

Clear condition information turns an unknown returns flow into an assessable stock submission.

Discontinued models and product range changes

When a new generation is introduced or a product range changes, earlier models can fall outside normal sales plans. They are not automatically technically or commercially obsolete; they may simply no longer fit the current presentation, positioning or stock strategy.

Identifiable item and model numbers, quantities, product generation, condition and documentation support a sound assessment. Also state any restrictions concerning when, where or through which channel the stock may be resold.

Different models, versions and generations can be shared in one overview. Stock & Trade then assesses the relationship, currency and possible markets for the total stock.

A discontinued model can fall outside the current range and still be a useful complete end product.

Residual seasonal stock

Seasonal stock may remain because of an unusual season, changing weather, late delivery, forecasts that were too high or a short sales window. Turnover often falls sharply after the season while warehouse space and capital remain tied up.

We consider not only current demand but also the durability of product information and packaging, and commercial usability in later seasons or other markets. State the sales season, quantities, condition, storage method and any final sale deadline.

You do not need to wait for the next season before submitting the stock. A timely, complete overview improves the scope for careful assessment and practical handling.

The end of a sales season does not have to mean the end of the commercial options.

Project surplus and cancelled orders

Business projects can leave complete products or resale-ready sets when excessive quantities were purchased, specifications change, a project is delayed or an order is fully or partly cancelled.

The stock may have been configured for a particular project but still have wider uses. Item and model numbers, technical specifications, quantities, condition and information about the original application help us assess its commercial potential.

Several project remnants or cancelled orders may be submitted together. State where the stock is located, whether it is all owned by the supplier and whether there is a final decision or collection date.

Complete project products that are no longer needed can find a suitable destination outside the original project.

Packaging changes, packaging damage and rebranding

A product may be fully usable and saleable while its packaging no longer fits the normal market launch. Causes include a new design, rebranding, changed language or market packaging, transport damage or cosmetic damage to the box.

Clearly distinguish damage to the packaging from damage to the product itself. Photos of the outer packaging, product labels and any damage help us assess this quickly.

Rebranding or packaging changes may require additional arrangements concerning markets, channels and brand presentation. Labels or identifiable elements are only changed or removed where legally permitted and where mandatory product, traceability and safety information remains intact.

Different packaging conditions may be included in one submission, provided the composition is described as transparently as possible.

Different or damaged packaging does not automatically say anything about the product's quality.

Warehouse moves, reorganisations and business closures

A warehouse move, reorganisation or business closure can create a specific point at which stock must be assessed quickly. It may include normal trading stock, older holdings, residual lots or several product groups stored at one or more locations.

An initial assessment does not always require a fully completed inventory. An existing stock list, approximate quantities, clear photos and location details may be enough to begin. State any final decision or collection date and whether the stock is spread across several warehouses or sites.

Stock & Trade assesses only commercial non-food stock that may be suitable for direct purchase. We are not a removals or clearance company and do not automatically take over the full contents, inventory or equipment of a warehouse.

Where a purchase is agreed, we can arrange collection and transport of the goods purchased if required. Loading method, timing, responsibilities and any costs are agreed in advance.

The supplier must own the goods or be demonstrably authorised to sell them. In an administration, liquidation, insolvency or similar process, we only make arrangements with the duly authorised party.

Selling suitable stock before a move, reorganisation or closure reduces what must still be moved or disposed of internally.

Commercial stock

Different stock conditions within one submission

A stock submission does not have to consist solely of identical products in the same condition. Unopened items, products with packaging damage, B-stock, checked returns and stock of unknown condition may all be present.

You do not need to divide this into separate submissions. However, differences should not be merged into one average quality description. Where known, state the quantities or percentages by condition and the basis for the classification.

For example:

  • 60% new and unopened;
  • 20% with packaging damage only;
  • 15% checked returns stock;
  • 5% not yet checked.

Where exact quantities are unavailable, condition codes, samples, reports or clear photos can help. Describe any unassessed portion as condition unknown.

Even where a limited part does not independently fit our usual buying profile, you may submit the complete stock offered. You do not need to sort out or remove these items first. Stock & Trade assesses the composition as a whole and then determines the options for the total lot.

Mixed stock does not need to be perfectly sorted in advance, provided its composition is presented honestly and as specifically as possible.

Commercial stock

One-off situations and recurring stock flows

Surplus stock can become available once or periodically. In both cases, the complete stock offered can be submitted directly to Stock & Trade.

One-off stock lots

A one-off lot may arise from overproduction, a product range change, a cancelled order, residual seasonal stock, a reorganisation or warehouse move. We assess the available stock as it stands and, when an agreement is reached, make clear arrangements concerning purchase, payment and any collection of the goods purchased.

Recurring stock flows

Do returns, B-stock, residual stock or other surpluses arise periodically? We can agree a recurring method for submitting and assessing new stock, including regular contacts, a recognisable data format and practical submission times.

A structured relationship does not have to be fully established immediately. We can begin with one existing submission and use it to determine a suitable method for future lots. Each new submission is assessed on its actual composition and the commercial and practical options at that time.

Whether stock becomes available once or periodically, a clear method supports rapid assessment and decisions.

Commercial stock

Why share the complete stock offered?

Stock rarely consists only of items with identical quantities, conditions and turnover rates. The relationships within it often determine what is possible for the lot as a whole.

If only the most popular items or largest quantities are selected in advance, important information may be missing. Less popular products, smaller quantities and different stock can still contribute to a suitable purchase when combined with the rest.

Preferably share the complete available overview, including the differences. You do not need to decide which items interest Stock & Trade or sort out different products yourself.

A complete stock picture helps us:

  • understand the scale and composition;
  • identify relationships between product groups, models and quantities;
  • assess different conditions together;
  • establish more quickly which type of purchase may be possible;
  • request additional information more precisely.

Sharing the complete stock does not commit you to anything and does not automatically mean every item or all the stock will be purchased. Stock & Trade assesses the lot as a whole and then clearly discusses the options.

The more complete the stock picture, the more precisely we can assess the options for the whole submission.

Commercial stock

What factors determine whether purchase is possible?

Not every stock submission can be purchased directly. The reason it is available is only one factor; Stock & Trade assesses the full commercial and practical situation.

Products and composition

We consider product groups, brands, models, quantities and relationships within the lot. It must mainly consist of complete commercial non-food products or complete resale-ready sets.

Condition and product information

Condition may vary, but it should be as clear as possible which part is new, used, returned, damaged or unchecked. Item data, photos, documentation and information about defects support the assessment.

Commercial options

Age, currency, original market position and possible markets also matter. Restrictions on countries, channels, brand presentation or timing of resale must be stated in advance.

Scale and value

There is no fixed public minimum quantity or value. Smaller quantities may be interesting when item value is higher or as part of broader stock. Conversely, high volume is not automatically suitable if the commercial options are too limited.

Location and practical feasibility

The location, available packaging, loading facilities, preferred timeframe and transportability influence how a purchase can be completed. If Stock & Trade purchases the stock, we can arrange collection and transport of the goods purchased if required.

The factors are always assessed together. Different packaging, an earlier generation or mixed condition need not be an obstacle where the overall stock offers sufficient potential. Submitting stock does not automatically lead to an offer or purchase.

It is not one characteristic, but the full commercial and practical feasibility that determines whether direct purchase is possible.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about stock situations

My stock fits several situations. Is that a problem?

No. One lot may include overstock, returns, discontinued models and items with packaging damage. You may submit the complete stock together.

Must the precise cause of the surplus stock be known?

Not always. The cause helps us understand the context, but the products, quantities, condition and commercial options matter more to the final assessment.

What if the condition has not been fully checked?

You can still submit the stock. Clearly state which part was checked, what information is available and which part remains unknown. Reports, condition codes, photos or samples can help.

Must a mixed stock lot be sorted first?

No. Different products and conditions can be submitted together. As complete an overview as possible helps us assess the composition as a whole.

Is a complete inventory needed before I make contact?

No. An existing stock list, warehouse report, approximate quantities or clear photos may be enough for an initial assessment. We will specify any additional information required.

Can we begin with one lot and work together regularly later?

Yes. A first stock submission can be a practical starting point. If similar surpluses recur, we can then explore a suitable regular method.

Do you purchase the full warehouse contents during a move or closure?

Not automatically. Stock & Trade assesses which commercial stock may qualify for purchase. We are not a removals or clearance company. Where an agreement is reached, we may arrange collection and transport of the goods actually purchased.

Does sharing the complete stock mean everything will be purchased?

No. The complete overview provides the information needed for a sound assessment. Only then do we discuss the possible type and scale of purchase.

Can I submit stock with a fixed deadline?

Yes. State the preferred decision or collection date in your request. We will assess whether careful evaluation, agreement and collection can be completed within that timeframe.

Discuss your stock

Discuss your stock situation with Stock & Trade

Do you recognise one of these situations in your organisation? Preferably share the complete stock offered with Stock & Trade. You can submit it even if the lot is mixed or not all information is available yet.

We assess the products, quantities, condition, location and any resale conditions together. Where the stock fits our capabilities, we discuss a direct-purchase offer and make clear arrangements concerning payment, transfer and any collection of the goods purchased.
